Currently, there are several methods of refractive surgery, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. What is common to all methods is the need to change the curvature of the cornea by use of an excimer laser. When a patient suffers from myopia, the central parts of the cornea is evaporated, which leads to some flattening. According to the laws of optics, a lens that has a flatter curvature of the surface is weaker when bending light rays. Thus, changes in the corneal curvature moves the focus onto the retina and therefore, a significant increase of visual acuity without eyeglasses or contact lenses.

With hyperopia, by contrast, peripheral parts of the cornea are evaporated, and better vision is achieved by strengthening of the curvature of the central optical zone. The cornea refracts more rays entering the eye, and the focus moves to the retina.

IntraLasik & Lasik
At the Boothe EyeCare & Laser Center many different kinds of the laser vision correction procedures are performed. The most famous laser procedure is IntraLasik surgery.
IntraLasik has a fundamental difference from other methods of laser vision correction. This is the creation of the corneal flap by the laser, not a mechanical microkeratome. At the same time IntraLasik can be combined with any excimer laser technology designed for Lasik, including the standard ablation, ablation on the basis of the Wavefront, and aspheric ablation.

Patients who have completed IntraLasik operations at Boothe Eye Care Center reported the benefits of using a Femtosecond laser. According to many patients, IntraLasik provides more accurate thickness, shape, and contour of the flap throughout the slice. This technology allows Dr. Boothe to create a flap of any size and arrange the “leg” of the flap in any meridian.

However, the main practical advantage of IntraLasik eye surgery is the possibility of forming a thinner corneal flap in comparison with a mechanical microkeratome. It is very important for patients with high myopia and thin corneas to carry out excimer laser vision correction.

In addition, the Femtosecond laser is used for different types of lamellar and penetrating keratoplasty.
