Lasik vs IntraLASIK

The Big Lasik Question

People ask me all the time, what is the difference between Lasik and IntraLASIK? Well, put simply, IntraLASIK is Lasik. The real question is what is the difference between traditional lasik and intralasik? The main difference between these two are how they cut the flap. Traditional lasik uses a blade to cut a small flap on the cornea and intralasik uses a laser to cut that same flap. This is why many lasik doctors call intralasik “all-laser lasik” or “blade-free lasik.”

Which Lasik is better?

The reason that using all lasers instead of a blade during lasik is a good idea, is because the lasik surgeon has greater control of the cut he is performing on your eye. During IntraLasik, the lasik surgeon has a better view of the progress of the flap creation. Flaps created during intralasik are also thinner allowing for more cornea during the surgery.

So why aren’t all lasik surgeons using all-laser IntraLASIK?

Cost is probably the biggest factor in why all surgeons do not use this new advanced technology. The fact that traditional lasik is a safe procedure and is FDA approved can lead some surgeons to not believe that they can justify the rise in cost for all-laser intralasik. While other lasik doctors believe that the intralasik is so much better that they refuse to perform the older version of lasik. In my opinion, Intralasik is much better than traditional lasik and should be the norm for lasik doctors.
